Experimental results for SUS304, SUS316, and other stainless steels exposed to the atmosphere for up to eight years indicate that environmental exposure has a greater impact on corrosion than the type of steel. Particularly, SUS430 exposed in an industrial zone near the sea showed significant corrosion.

Durability of SUS304

SUS304 was tested specifically for its functionality as an exterior material. Durability estimates over 40 years were based on the depth of corrosion holes. The test revealed that while SUS304’s appearance changed noticeably in the early stages of exposure, the rate of change slowed over time.

Corrosion Depth Findings

  • In highly corrosive areas, SUS304’s corrosion depth was approximately 0.13mm or less.
  • It was confirmed that atmospheric corrosion affects the surface processing of stainless steel, with minimal impact from the type of steel used.
  • It is estimated that after 40 years, the maximum corrosion depth of SUS304 will be only 0.18mm, demonstrating its excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance as a building material.
